🐰 Google Blows Another AI Launch

AI continues its rapid advancement across multiple fronts. In this edition of the BunnyPixel newsletter, we'll break down the latest AI news and breakthroughs with a few fun bits along the way. Lets get started…

AI Overviews: Another Botched Launch from Google

Google's new AI Overviews feature, designed to provide users with quick summaries of complex topics, has faced significant backlash due to numerous factual inaccuracies. Launched after Google's I/O 2024 developers conference, this feature was meant to streamline information retrieval but instead has generated bizarre and potentially dangerous recommendations, raising serious concerns about reliability and user trust .

Bizarre and Dangerous Recommendations

Several troubling responses from Google's AI have been reported. For instance, a user seeking advice on how to keep cheese from sliding off pizza was advised to add non-toxic glue to the sauce, a suggestion sourced from a satirical Reddit post. Another case involved the AI recommending the consumption of rocks, falsely attributing this advice to Berkeley geologists. These errors highlight a critical lack of common sense in AI decision-making.

Echoes of Past Issues

These issues are reminiscent of previous challenges Google faced with its AI chatbot, Bard. Launched in March 2023, Bard was criticized for lacking adequate safety and ethical measures. In February 2024, Google had to turn off Bard's image creation feature after it produced inappropriate images, reflecting ongoing difficulties in managing AI-generated content responsibly.

Social Media Backlash

The errors of AI Overviews have not gone unnoticed. Social media platforms have been inundated with examples of these inaccuracies, leading to a viral spread of memes and posts that have amplified the public's demand for better quality control and ethical considerations in AI development.

Google's Response and Future Plans

In response to the criticism, Google has acknowledged the issues and is taking steps to rectify them. The company has been manually disabling AI Overviews for specific queries and aims to improve the system's reliability. Google CEO Sundar Pichai remains optimistic, emphasizing the company's commitment to enhancing the accuracy and safety of AI-generated content.

It seems to me that Google is desperate and rushing these tools out too fast to try and keep up to the competition.

Is Google also losing your trust ?

Microsoft Launches the Computer That Records Everything You Do

And while we are on the topic of Big Tech, AI and trust issues, Microsoft announced their lineup of AI PCs this week.

Microsoft's New AI Feature Raises Privacy Concerns

Microsoft has introduced a new AI feature called Recall for its upcoming Copilot+ PCs. This feature takes screenshots of your laptop every few seconds and stores them locally. Privacy advocates are worried this could lead to unauthorized access to personal data and loss of control over digital footprints.

Privacy Advocates Sound the Alarm

The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is contacting Microsoft about Recall's safety. Privacy campaigners have labeled the feature a potential 'privacy nightmare.' Experts remain skeptical despite Microsoft's assurances that Recall is optional and comes with privacy controls.

Impact on User Behavior

Recall's ability to search through past activities, like files, photos, and browsing history, raises concerns. Dr. Kris Shrishak, an AI and privacy advisor, warns this could deter people from visiting certain websites or accessing confidential documents, leading to a loss of trust in digital platforms.

Experts emphasize the need for Microsoft to have a lawful basis for recording and displaying users' personal information. Capturing proprietary or confidential information in professional settings poses significant risks. Questions about obtaining consent from individuals appearing in screenshots during video calls remain unresolved.

Risk of Exposing Sensitive Information

Jen Caltrider from Mozilla highlights the dangers of storing sensitive information, like passwords and financial data, in screenshots. Despite Microsoft's claims, privacy advocates remain concerned. Caltrider advises against using Recall for sensitive activities.

A Safer Approach: Open Source and Limited AI Use

Users are urged to be cautious about big tech companies' AI integration. A safer approach involves using open-source operating systems like Linux for more transparency and control over data privacy. Individuals can protect their privacy while benefiting from technology by carefully selecting where and how AI tools are used.

Elon Musk's xAI Raises $6B for AI Gigafactory.

Breaking News! Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, has just secured a staggering $6 billion to construct an AI supercomputer aptly named the 'Gigafactory of Compute.' This monumental endeavor aims to surpass tech giants like Meta by creating a supercomputer four times more potent than the largest ones in existence today.

What's the Plan?

This supercomputer, set for completion by fall 2025, will use Nvidia's top-of-the-line H100 GPUs. The exact location is still under wraps, but Musk promises it will be ready on time.

Why It Matters

The Gigafactory of Compute is a game-changer. It will power xAI's advanced AI systems, especially their AI chatbot, Grok. Grok's next version, expected by the end of 2024, is projected to be on par with AI systems from OpenAI and Google. To achieve this, Grok will need massive computational power, with future versions requiring up to 100,000 H100 GPUs.

The Big Picture

With a substantial $6 billion in funding, xAI is poised to bring their first products to market, build their infrastructure, and accelerate research and development. The strong backing from investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital is a testament to their unwavering confidence in xAI's future.

Looking Ahead

As xAI moves forward with the Gigafactory of Compute, Musk's Grok looks like a leading contender for the king of AI chat. The AI industry is exciting, and we can't wait to see what they'll achieve next.
